Berries have proven massively beneficial in diabetes prevention because they’re packed with antioxidants. Blackcurrant, specifically, has been shown to lower blood sugar over time, helping stave off the conditionAccording to the American Diabetes Association, the fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants found in berries make them a diabetes superfood. Numerous berries have been linked to improvements in blood sugar control, but according to one study, blackcurrant may offer ‘favourable’ effects that may ward off diabetes over time.Science Daily explains: “Black coloured berries, rich in anthocyanin, seem to attenuate the blood glucose response to added sugar, compared to a control product having the same amount of sugar. “The same effect is demonstrated by anthocyanin extracted from blackcurrants.Polyphenolic compounds may slow down the absorption of glucose from the small intestine by interacting with carbohydrates-digesting enzymes and glucose transport proteins. “In addition, polyphenolic compounds may reduce oxidative stress and inflammation." In one study led by the University of Eastern Finland, researchers looked at a sample of 26 healthy participants who consumed a range of tests products during a set of four visits. Sugar water was consumed as a control product, while test products included blackcurrant puree with added sugar, a blackcurrant product containing fermented quinoa, and a blackcurrant product without blackcurrants.
